Thanks for getting me to read “Born To Run”. It’s bringing back memories for me. Some familiar names are in there, like Ann Trason, Joe Vigil and Pat Porter. McDougalll really hypes the Leadville race. I was a pacer there in 1987 and 88. In 88, I paced the winner, Steve Warshawer. At the time, it didn’t seem like any big deal, I saw it as a workout that just never seemed to end.
I ended up running 40 miles, because his other pacer took ill. I wanted to pull Steve to a better time – he was much stronger than Spady that day and he could have easily broken 18 hrs – but he didn’t want to crush Spady mentally. There is a different kind of ethic in that sport – I was a track/road runner and wanted to tear into the guy.
We had been training partners for years. The Leadville website indicates that he lived in GA at the time. That is incorrect. He lived in the boondocks near Lamy, NM.
Anyway, these are some good memories.

Just read an AHA interview with Gore Vidal. Good to know that a giant of independent journalism has the same negative view of Ch. Hitchens as I do. But really what did I expect? That he wouldn’t?
It’s also nice to know that AR is consistently ignored by AHA, evidence that I was also right about what AHA is really about.

Does anybody know how Paul Kurtz is doing these days? And what is this talk about AHA and CFI getting closer to each other? Could it be that common sense is not so uncommon after all?
